Sleeping in a Rainforest at Fond Doux Holiday Plantation St. Lucia
After months of research on where to stay in St. Lucia for my Bride Kristin and her fiance Brannan’s destination wedding, I came across Fond Doux Holiday Plantation, a 19th century colonial plantation located in the south west part of the island called Soufriere. It’s one of the oldest working plantations in the Caribbean at over 250 years old. Today, Fond Doux Holiday Plantation is the only true organic estate on the island, with most of the produce being harvested on the plantation. It is the only resort in St. Lucia that engages in true eco building practices and natural preservation. A big turning point for the plantation was in 2008 when The Prince of Wales and his wife, the Duchess of Cornall visited the plantation for an official tour. The Guardian a British newspaper, voted Fond Doux Holiday Plantation one of the five best plantations retreats in the world.
We flew into Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) which is about 45 minutes away from the plantation, the views on our way through the windy mountain roads were breathtaking. Once we arrived we were offered a welcome drink at the hotel bar situated in the lush tropical gardens. The trek up to our Tree-house perched on the side of the mountain which is also known as the Honeymoon Suite was a workout, fabulous for your gluts. This is a very unique and interesting experience for a city girl, your room is basically open to all the elements, so you feel as though you are one with nature. I say interesting and unique because it took me a little bit to grasp that all the little creatures liked to be in my room, not outside where I think they would be happier. We had an infinity pool in our sitting room that overlooked the rain forest which was very romantic. It’s quite and breezy during the day in the rain forest with spurts of rain (downpours) all the time which gives you the real experience of being in a rain forest hence why everything is so lush and green. Be prepared at night when the bugs and creatures talk to each other, it was incredible, I have never heard such amazing sounds or should I say a grand symphony. I was wondering why there were ear plugs on the night stands, you needed more like ear muffs!
A truly memorable experience, I would recommend this beautiful hotel to anyone wanting to visit St. Lucia. Take a look at the pictures I took from all over the property.
